Panther

PANTHER. The Jews, and after them some of the Fathers1, have owned one by the Name of Panther among the Ancestors of Jesus Christ; but they are not agreed about the Place he should possess in this Genealogy. The surest Way is absolutely to reject it, as being contrary to the Evangelists, who make no Mention of him; and as being maliciously introduced by the Jews into the Genealogy of our Saviour, to make it the more precarious and contemptible. See our Dissertation before St. Luke’s Gospel, wherein we reconcile St. Matthew and St. Luke in their Genealogies of Jesus Christ.
