PALSIE, Paralysis. This Distemper is a Preclusion or Stoppage of one or more of the Limbs, which deprives them of Motion, and makes them useless to the Patient. There are some Palsies that are very painful, and others not so much, from the Nature of the Humours that cause them. Our Saviour cured several Paralyticks by his Word alone. See Matth. iv. 24. viii. 6. ix. 2. Mark ii. 3, 4, &c. Luke v. 18, &c. The sick Man that was lying near the Pool at the Sheep-market, for thirty-eight Years was a Paralytick, John v. 5. The Word Paralytick is derived from the Greek Word Paraluo, which signifies to resolve or relax; as if it was to shew, that the Palsie is a Relaxation of the Nerves. But it may be produced by other Causes.
