NOD, or the Land of Nod. ‘Twas to this Country that Cain withdrew after his Parricide, Gen. iv. 16. The Seventy, as also Josephus, have read Naid instead of Nod, and have taken it for the Name of a Place. It can’t be easily known what Country this was, unless perhaps it was the Country of Nyse or Nysea, towards Hyrcania. St. Jerome and the Chaldee have taken the Word Nod in the Sense of an Apellative, for Vagabond or Fugitive. Habitavit profugus in terra. The Hebrew has it, Habitavit in terra Nod.
