John iv. 20.NAPLOUSE, in Greek Neapolis. ‘Tis the same as Sechem, a famous City in the Province of Samaria; or at least Naplouse was very near the Place of Sechem. When the Emperor Vespatian rebuilt Shechem, he gave it the Name of Flavia, which was the Name of his own Family. It had also the Name of Neapolis, or the new City, from whence is formed the Name Naplouse, which it bears to this Day. It was heretofore an episcopal Seat; now it is the Head of a little Government bearing its Name. The Persian Geographer says, that Naplouse was one of Adams Oratories. We know that the Inhabitants of Shechem boasted, that the ancient Patriarchs had worshiped upon their Mountain. In Monte Hor adoraverunt Patres nostri. In the 583 Year of the Hegira, or 1205 of Jesus Christ, the famous Saladin, after taking of Tiberias, made himself Master of Shechem and Samaria. The Samaritans made themselves a King in the City of Naplouse, under the Empire of Zeno; but this Prince punished them severely, and put their King to death.
