Mystick

MYSTICK. The mystical Sense of the Scriptures is that which is derived from the Terms or Letter of the Scripture, after and besides their literal Signification. For Example, Babylon signifies literally a City of Chaldæa, the Habitation of Kings that were Persecutors of the Hebrew, and overwhelmed in Idolatry and Wickedness. According to the mystical Sense, Babylon signifies a corrupted World, Sinners, wicked Persons persecuting good Men. St. John in the Revelations gives the Name of Babylon to the City of Rome, then Pagan and an Enemy to the Truth. So Jerusalem is literally put for Jerusalem a City of Judæa; but mystically it signifies the heavenly Jerusalem, which is the Habitation of the Saints. The Word Serpent as to the Letter, signifies a venomous Reptile; and in a mystical Sense it signifies the Devil, the old Serpent that tempted Eve.
