MEROZ, Judg. v. 23. It was a Place in the Neighbourhood of the Brook Kishon, whose Inhabitants refusing to come to the Assistance of their Brethren when they fought with Sisera, were put under an Anathema. Curse ye Meroz, says the Angel of the Lord; curse ye bitterly the Inhabitants thereof: Because they came not to the Help of the Lord, to the Help of the Lord against the Mighty. Some have thought that Meroz is the same as Merrus or Merom, which we have just now mentioned; and this perhaps is the most probable Opinion concerning this Matter.
Others1 will have it, that Meroz was a mighty Man, who dwelt near the Kishon, who not caring to come to the Assistance of Barak and Deborah, was excommunicated by the Angel of the Lord, by the Sound of four hundred Trumpets. The Angel of the Lord, according to some, was Barak, the General of the Lord’s Army: But according to others he was the High-priest for the Time being, or a Prophet, or the Angel Michael, or some other Angel. Some believe that Meroz was the Angel of the Canaanites, who was cursed by Michael, the Guardian Angel of the Israelites.
