Dan. xi. 38, 39.MAUZZIM, or Maozim. Daniel says, that the Tyrant Antiochus Epiphanes, who is the Type and Forerunner of Antichrist, shall honour the God of Forces, [or Mauzzim] and a God whom his Fathers knew not shall he honour with Gold and Silver, &c. Interpreters are much divided about this God Mauzzim. Some take it to be Jupiter Olympius, to whom Antiochus offered Incense in a Place unknown to his Fathers, that is, in the Temple of Jerusalem. Others understand the God Mars, whom Daniel insinuates by the Term Mauzzim, or the God of the Strong. But can Mars be said to be a strange God in Respect of Antiochus Epiphanes? Porphyrius quoted by St. Jerome1 says, that Mauzzim was the God adored in the little City of Modin, the Countrey of the Maccabees. Others think that the Hebrew of Daniel ought to be thus translated, ℣ 37. He shall magnifie himself above all Things, ℣ 38. and against the God Mauzzim. (the most strong God, the God of Fortresses, the God of Hosts). He shall honour in his Stead a strange God unknown to his Fathers. Antiochus Epiphanes exalted himself against the Lord, the most strong God, the God of Israel, and caused to be set up in his Place, in the Temple of Jerusalem, the false God Jupiter Olympius, unknown to his Fathers the ancient Kings of Syria, who reigned in this Countrey before Alexander the Great, Daniel in more Places Dan. viii. 10, 11. xi. 31.than one points out the God of Israel, by the Name Mauz, strong, or God of Hosts.
