Matthias (IV)

IV. MATTHIAS, Son of Theophilus, High-priest of the Jews, succeeded Jesus Son of Gamaliel, in the Year of the World 4068, of Jesus Christ 68, of the Vulgar Æra 65. He was deposed three Years afterwards, to make Way for Phannias Son of Samuel, the last High-priest of this Nation, and under whom the Temple was taken and burnt by the Romans, in the Year of Christ 73, of the Vulgar Æra 70. ‘Twas under Matthias that the War broke out, between the Jews and the Romans1. Matthias persuaded the People to let Simon Gioras come into Jerusalem, to set him up against John, and by that Means to balance his too great Authority2. But Simon seeing himself Master of the City, soon forgot the Obligations he had to Matthias, and put him to Death with three of his Sons, without so much as giving them a Hearing3: For they were accused of being in the Interest of the Romans.
