II. MARESHAH, or Marissa, a City of the Tribe of Judah t. ‘Tis also called Moresheth and Morasthi. The Prophet Micah was a Native of this City; and in the Time of Eusebius it was forsaken, being two Miles from Eleutheropolis. ‘Twas near Mareshah, in the Vale of Zephathah, that the famous Battle was fought between Asa King of Judah, and Zerah King of Chus,1 in which Asa obtained the Victory against an Army of a Million of Men, which he put to Flight, and pursued as far as Gerar2. In 1 Macc. v. 66. is read Samaria instead of Marissa. In the latter Times of the Jewish Commonwealth, Maresbah was given to Idumæa3, as also several others of the southerly Cities of Judah. It was peopled by the Jews, and their Allies, in the Time of John Hyrcanus4. King Alexander Jannæus took it from the Arabians5. Pompey restored it to its first Inhabitants6. Gabinius rebuilt it7, and lastly the Parthians destroyed it in the War of Antigonus against Herod8.
