MAPSE. Ptolemy speaks of the City of Mapse in Idumæa, to the West of Jordan. The antient Notitia Ecclesiastica places it in the third Palestine, under the Name of Mapse or Mapsis. We know of no City in the Scriptures by this Name, but we read of Mibsam Son of Ishmael, who may probably give Occasion to the Name of this Place.
