Malchus (I)

I. MALCHUS, or Malichus. This Name is derived from the Hebrew Melech, which signifies a King. Josephus1 speaks of Malchus King of the Arabs, who had received great Obligations from Herod Son of Antipater, who was afterwards King of the Jews. Antigonus, by the Assistance of the Persians having forced Herod to retire from Jerusalem, he had a Mind to take Refuge with Malchus; but this Prince sent him Word, that he forbid him to enter into his Dominions. This obliged Herod to go into Egypt, from whence he proceeded to Rome2.
