MAHANAIM, or Manaim, a City of the Levites of the Family of Merari, in the Tribe of Gad, upon the Book Jabok. The Name Mahanaim signifies the two Fields. The Patriarch Jacob gave it this Name, because in this Place he had a Vision of Angels coming to meet him, Gen. xxxii. 2. Mahanaim was the Seat of the Kingdom of Ish-bosheth, after the Death of Saul, 1 Sam. ii. 9, 12. ‘Twas also to this Place that David retired, during the Usurpation of Absalom, and this rebellious Son was subdued and suffered Death not far from this City. In the Vulgate it is sometimes called Gen. xxxii. 2. 2 Sam. ii. 9, 12. 29. xvii. 24. xix. 32. 2 Sam. xxxiii. 28. 1 Chron. xxvii. 13.simply Castra, or the Camp.
