Macheronte

MACHERONTE, or Machærus, a City and Fort beyond Jordan; in the Tribe of Reuben; to the North and East of the Lake Asphaltites, two or three Leagues from Jordan, and not far from the Place where this River discharges itself into the Dead Sea. This Castle had been fortified by the Asmoneans. Gabinius demolished it1, and Aristobulus fortified it anew2. Herod the great made it much stronger than before. Either there or in the Neighbourhood was a Spring of hot Waters, very useful for Health. John the Baptist was put in Prison, and beheaded at Macheronte3; by the Order of Herod Antipas.
