Macedonia

MACEDONIA, a Kingdom of Greece, situated between Thrace to the North, Thessaly to the South, Epirus to the West, and the Ægean Sea to the East, We believe that Macedonia was peopled by Kittim Son of Javan, and that as often as Kittim is mentioned in the Hebrew Text, Macedonia is to be understood. See Kittim before. Alexander the Great, Son of Philip King of Macedonia, having made the Conquest of Asia, and subverted the Empire of the Persians, the Name of the Macedonians became very famous in all the East; and the Name of Macedonians is often given to the Greeks, who were Successors to Alexander in the Monarchy. See Esther xvi. 10, 14. and 2 Mac. viii. 20. And in like Manner the general Gen. x. 4. See Dan. viii. 21. x. 20. 1 Mac viii. 18. 2 Mac. iv. 36.Name of Greeks is often put for the Macedonians, from the Time of the Conquest of Alexander the Great. Saint Paul was invited by the Angel of this Province, which appeared to him at Troas, to come to preach the Gospel in Macedonia1. After this Vision, Saint Paul no longer doubted that God had called him to preach in Macedonia; and the Success that attended his Preaching confirmed him more in this Opinion. There he laid the Foundations of the Churches of Thessalonica and Philippi, and had the Satisfaction of seeing them flourishing and numerous, and abounding in all spiritual Gifts and Graces.
