Volume II · L

Lydia

LYDIA, a Woman of Thyatira a Seller of Purple, who dwelt in the City of Acts xvi. 14, 40.Philippi in Macedonia. She was converted to the Lord by Saint Paul’s preaching, and was baptized, she and all her Family. She offered her House to Saint Paul and pressed him so earnestly to stay there, that he was prevailed with by her Intreaties. This Woman was not by Birth a Jewess, but a Proselyte. She is acknowledged to be a Saint, and the Roman Martyrology commemorates her upon the third of August. Lydia is perhaps the Name of her Country, and she might be commonly called the Lydian, Lydia.
