Liberty of the Gospel

LIBERTY of the Gospel, in Opposition to the Servitude of the Law. Saint Paul has often spoken of this Liberty, which Jesus Gal. iv. 31.Christ hath procured for us: We are not the Children of the Bond-Woman, but of the Free. We are not derived from Hagar, who and her Descendants are Slaves, meaning the Jews; but we are the Sons of Sarah the free Woman: We enjoy the Liberty of God’s Children, by Virtue of the Adoption procured for us by Jesus Christ. Which Liberty delivers us from the Yoke of legal Ceremonies, from the Obligation of observing Purifications and Distinctions of Meats, and many other troublesome and uneasy Practices, to which the Jews were subjected by the Law. See Rom. viii. 21. and 1 Cor. x. 29. and 2. Cor. iii. 17. and Galat. ii, iv, v. and James i. 25. ii, 12.
