KADMONITES, that is to say, Eastern People, ancient Inhabitants of the promised Land, descended from Canaan the Son of Ham. Their Habitation was beyond Jordan, to the East of Phœnicia, about Mount Libanus. The celebrated Cadmus, the founder of Thebes in Bœotia, is thought to have been originally a Kadmonite, and his Wife Hermione to have taken her Name from Mount Hermon. The Kadmonites were Hivites, and the Word Hivites is derived from a Root which signifies a Serpent. The Fable says, that Cadmus sowed Serpents Teeth, and that from thence sprung up armed Men, because he settled his Hivites or Kadmonites at Thebes, who were the Fathers of a valiant and martial Nation.
