Jacob's Well

JACOB’S WELL, or Fountain. This is the Well near Schechem, at which our Saviour conversed with the woman of John iv. 16.Samaria. Jacob dwelt near this place, before his sons slew the inhabitants of Schechem. The old travellers speak of a Church dedicated to St. John the Baptist, and built in the form of a cross upon Jacob’s Well or Fountain1. The Well was in the Church, and before the rails of the Altar. It was said that the bucket was still to be seen there, which the woman of Samaria made use of, and the sick came thither to drink out of it, and recover their health.
