ITALY. S. Jerom translates the Hebrew word Cethim or Citthim in Numb. xxiv. 24. and Ezek. xxvii. 6. by Italia. But we have shewn upon Genesis x. 4. that by Cethim is meant Macedonia. The same S. Jerom in Isaiah lxvi. 19. translates the Hebrew, Thubal, Italia, tho according to others the Tibarenians are rather signified by it. In the Sacred Books written originally in Greek, there is no ambiguity in the word Italia; it signifies that part of the world whereof Rome is the Capital.
