IONIA, part of Asia Minor, which reaches along the Egean sea, to the westward of it. Caria lies to the south of it, and Æolis to the north. There were computed to be twelve cities antiently in Ionia, Miletus, Myus, Lebedus, Colophon, Priene, Theos, Clazomenæ, Ephesus, Phocea, and Smyrna in the continent, together with Chios and Samos in the islands of the same name. No one doubts but that the name Ionians came from Javan the son of Japhet: but some suppose that of old, it included the people of Attica, and other inhabitants of Greece. See above, Javan.
