In the year of the World 2553, before J. C. 1447, before the Vulgar Æra 1451. עלהAscendit, seu Holocaustum.HOLOCAUST, comes from the Greek, Holocauston1, which signifies intirely burnt, because all the flesh of Burnt-offerings was consumed by fire upon the Altars, herein differing from the Sacrifices for Sin and other Sacrifices, some parts whereof, which were not consumed upon the Altar, were reserved. The Hebrew word Halah, which is translated Holocaust, or Burnt-offering, is derived from a root, that signifies to go up: because the whole Sacrifice, which is thus offered, is made to ascend and evaporate in smoke. The oldest Sacrifices whereof we have any knowledge, are Burnt-offerings; and it is very probable, that before the Law, no others were offered, and that even the Sacrifices for Sin, and Thanksgiving were Holocausts. See hereafter the Article SACRIFICE. After the erection of the Tabernacle, or at least after the building of the Temple, or the time when the Tabernacle was fixed in one place, two Lambs were offered every day as Burnt-offerings upon the brazen Altar, one in the morning, the other in the evening: the first before all the other Sacrifices; and the second, after all those of the day.
