HIPPOS, a City of note in the time of Josephus the Historian, and Capital of a small Canton called Hippene. This City was situated beyond the Lake of Tiberias, thirty furlongs from Tiberias, and sixty from Gadara. The Plains of Hippos and Scythopolis were adjacent to one another. The Hippene, Gadara, and the Gaulanitis were the southern boundaries of Galilee. Hippos was an Episcopal City, and we find some of its Bishops among the subscribers to particular Councils. What its ancient name was, we do not know; for Hippos is a Greek word, which signifies an horse.
