Heaps of Stones

HEAPS of Stones amassed together over the graves of odious persons. We see Psal. lxxx. 11. Josh. vii. 26.some examples of this in Scripture in the person of Achan, whom all the people stoned, and raised a very great Heap of stones over him, which was shewn there long after. The King of Ai was served in Josh. viii. 29.the like manner: he hung upon a gibbet till evening, then his dead body was cast out of the city-gate, where a great Heap of stones was raised over him. Absalom received the same treatment. They took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great Heap of stones upon him, &c. 2 Sam. xviii. 17. The Prophets likewise speak of Heaps of stones to be seen in the ruins of depopulated cities. Damascus shall be as a ruinous Heap, Isa. xvii. 1. as also of the Heaps of stones which were gathered together in fields and vineyards; I will make Samaria as an Heap of the field, and as plantings of a vineyard, Micah i. 6.
