Giscala

Joseph. de Bello, l. 4. c. 4.GISCALA, a City of Galilee, which Josephus often mentions in his Books concerning the wars of the Jews. He says it was fortified by his directions, and that the Idem. l. 4. c. 1. Reland. Palæst. l.3.p.813.inhabitants of Gabares, Cabarages, and Tyre took it by force. M. Reland believes it to be the same with that spoken of in Jewish authors, under the name of Gusch- Chaleb, and is placed between Morom and Capharanan.

St. Jerom1 says, that there was a fabulous Tradition of St. Paul’s being originally of the City of Giscala, that his parents dwelt there; but that during the troubles in the Province, when the Romans made war there, they were obliged to retire to Tarsus in Cilicia. He says in another place2, that St. Paul was of the Tribe of Benjamin, and City of Giscala; but that after the taking of this City by the Romans, he was forced to retire with his parents to Tarsus in Cilicia. Nothing was ever worse put together than this fable; for the war, which the Romans carried on against the Jews, was not begun till after the death of St. Paul. This Apostle died in the year 66 of Jesus Christ, and the war against the Jews did not commence till the year 67 or 68.
