FOUNTAIN. There are several celebrated Fountains in Judæa, most of them have been taken notice of by us, in our account of those places, to which they are adjacent. For example, speaking of Jezreel and Emmaüs, it has been observed that there was a Fountain near these places. We have likewise mentioned several cities above, under the word En, which took their names from Fountains: for in Hebrew, Ain, or Ein, or En, signify an Eye, or a Fountain. Thus by Enshemesh is meant, the Fountain of the Sun; Engeddi, the Kids Fountain; En-gannim, the Fountain of Gardens; and so on.
