Fish

FISH, in Hebrew, Dag. The Hebrews place Fish among creeping things. We have very few Hebrew names for any particular Levit. xi. 9, 10, 11, 12. Deut. xiv. 9, 10.Fish, and I do not know that there are any in the sacred Text. Moses is content to say in general, that all sorts of river, lake, and sea-fish might be eaten, provided they had scales and fins; and that such as have not these, are unclean and forbidden. Notwithstanding St. Barnabas in his Epistle has a citation, as from Scripture, You shall not eat of the lamprey, the manyfeet, or the cuttle-fish. We have already spoken of the Crocodile, and shall speak of the Whale in its place.
