Epiphania

EPIPHANIA, a City of Syria, upon the river Orontes, between Antioch and Apamea. Several of the ancients say1, that it was of old called Hamath, before Antiochus Epiphanes gave it the name of Epiphania. St. Jerom, and several others are of opinion, that it is the same as Hamath the great. He says, that even then in his time, the Syrians called Epiphania, Emmas. But we shall shew in the Article Hamath, that this was not Epiphania, but Emesa in Syria.
