Ephphatha

Matth. vii. 32, 33, 34.EPHPHATHA. This is an Hebrew, or rather a Syriac word, derived from the Hebrew, Pathach, to open, be opened. Our Saviour pronounced this word, when he cured one deaf and dumb, by putting his fingers into his ears, and his spittle upon his tongue, then lifting up his eyes to heaven and sending forth a deep sigh, he said, Ephphatha, be opened; and immediately his ears were opened, and his tongue was loosed.
