Ephez-Dammim

EPHEZ-DAMMIM, Dammim, or Phez-Dammim, a place in the Tribe of Judah between Shocho and Azekah, where the Philistins encamped, when Goliath insulted 1 Sam. xvii. 1, 2.the battalions of the Israelites. Here again the Philistins met another time, after that David was acknowledged King. Upon this occasion it was that Eleazar and Shammah, two Heroes in this Prince’s army, alone put a stop to the enemies army, having posted themselves in the midst of a field sowed with barley, 1 Chr. xi. 13, 14. There are some who think the true name of this place to be Dommim, or Dammim, which signifies Blood. The text of the Vulgate instead of Ephes-Dammim, reads in finibus Dommim. 1 Sam. xvii. 1. 1 Chr. xi. 18.
