TO DIVIDE, is taken for to cut, to tear in pieces, to cut in two. The punishment of sawing and cutting the body asunder in the middle, was common enough among the ancients. We shall say something of it under the Article PUNISHMENTS. St. Matth. xxiv. 51.Matthew alludes to it in this passage; And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. Dividet eum partemque ejus ponet cum hypocritis. And Daniel xiii. 15. Angelus Dei scindet te medium. See likewise 2 Sam. xii. 31. Divisitque cultris. And 2 Macc. i. 16. Diviserunt membratim. The other significations of the word Divido are well known.
