Dositheus (IV)

IV. DOSITHEUS, lived in the time of Jesus Christ, was a contemporary and associate Hegesip. apud Euseb. l. 4. c. 12. Hist. Eccles.with Simon the Magician. He had a mind to be the principal of the Jewish Doctors, but finding that he was not able to succeed in this design, he threw himself into the party of the Samaritans, and among them formed a sect which bore his Epiphan. Hæres. 13. Dosith.name. This sect made professions of great abstinence and purity. Dositheus having shut himself up in a cave, died there by denying himself all sort of nourishment. We do not enlarge upon this Dositheus or his sect, because there is no mention of it in the Bible.
