Josh. xii. 23. Josh. xvii. 11.DOR, or Dora, the capital of a certain country in the land of Canaan, called in Hebrew Nephat-Dor. Joshua conquered it, and killed the King of it. He gave the city Dor to the half Tribe of Manasseh on this side Jordan. Dor is situated upon the Mediterranean, with a very bad port belonging to it ; it lies between Cæsarea in Palestine, and mount Carmel, nine miles or three leagues from Cæsarea. It is often placed in Phœnicia. Antiochus Sidetes besieged Tryphon in it, the Usurper of the 1 Macc. xv. 11.kingdom of Syria.
Some young people of Dor having of Joseph. Petronius hereupon wrote a Letter in very strong terms to the Magistrates of this City, commanding them to send to him the authors of this innovation, and to take care that nothing of the like nature should happen for the future: that they should not seek any occasion of quarrelling with the Jews, and should leave every one at liberty to worship God in his own way.
