Doeg

DOEG, an Edomite1, Saul’s chief herdsman, being at Nob, at the time when David came thither, to desire a supply of provision from Abimelech, he gave notice of it to Saul, and was the cause of this Prince’s sending for all the Priests, who were at Nob, and of the orders which he gave to have them all massacred in his presence, as accomplices with David in the pretended conspiracy, with 1 Sam. xxii. 16, 17, 18.which Saul charged him. When the Priests, to the number of fourscore and five, were brought before the King, and he commanded his people to dispatch them, none of them were so hardy as to lay their hands upon persons so particularly dedicated to God’s Service. But Doëg having received this order, executed it without scruple or reluctancy.

Footnotes

  1. 1 Sam. xxi. 7. Josephus reads Arami in the Text, instead of Edomi. He says, Doëg was an Aramite, or Syrian, instead of an Edomite. He fell into this mistake by copying the Septuagint. ↩
