DIPLOIS. This is a Greek word, which signifies a garment or cloak lined. The Psalmist prays to God that he would confound those, who spoke evil of him, and cover them with shame, as with a cloak. Operiantur sicut diploïde confusione sua. But the Hebrew Mehil signifies properly a cloak or upper coat. As the Cynick Philosophers wore no tunicks, or under garments, they were generally contented with a Diploïs, or double cloak.
Contra quem duplici panno patientia velat.
Horat. l. 1. Ep. 17. de Diogene Cynico. Luke xii. 6.Baruch has also used the word Diploïs, chap. v. ver. 2. But as we have not this Book in Hebrew, we cannot tell what he meant by it.
