Decapolis

DECAPOLIS, a country in Palestine, so called, because it contained ten principal cities, situated some on this, and some on the other side of Jordan. The first and principal city of Decapolis, is Scythopolis: the rest are, according to Pliny, 2. Philadelphia; 3. Raphanæ; 4. Gadara; 5. Hippos; 6. Dion; 7. Pella; 8. Gerasa; 9. Canatha; 10. Damascus. Others reckon them after another manner, as Pliny himself observes. The Decapolis is Matth. iv. 45. Mark v. 20.mention’d in two or three places of the Gospel; and Jesus Christ preached there frequently.
