Judg. iv. 4, 5, & seq.I. DEBORAH, a Prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, who judged the Israelites, and dwelt under a palm-tree1 between Rama and Bethel. She sent for Barak the son of Abinoam, and by God’s command enjoined him to get together an army of ten thousand men, to lead them to Tabor, and promised him victory over Sisera, General of Jabin’s army. Barak refused to go, unless Deborah went with him. She went, but withal told him, that the success of this expedition would be imputed to a woman and not to him. The event verified her prediction. Sisera was defeated, as has been shewn in the Article of Barak: and after the victory, Deborah and Barak composed a fine thanksgiving-song, which we read in the fifth Chapter of Judges. This victory was obtained in the year of the World 2719, before Jesus Christ 1281, before the Vulgar Æra 1285.

Translators’ note. Judea was celebrated among the Ancients for its great abundance of Palm-trees, as appears from this expression in Lucan, l. iii.——Arbusto Palmarum dives Idume. For by Idume they meant Judæa. ↩
