| The Birth of Aaron, Son of Amram and Jocabed. | ||
| 2433 | The Birth of Moses, Brother to Aaron. He is exposed upon the Banks of the Nile, and found by Pharaoh's Daughter, who gives him to Jocabed to nurse, and adopts him for her own Son. Moses goes to visit his Brethren; kills an Egyptian that insulted an Hebrew. But being inform'd that Pharaoh knew what he had done, he retires into the Country of Midian, where he marries Zipporah, the Daughter of Jethro. He had two Sons by her, Gershon and Eliezer. The Lord appear'd to Moses in a burning Bush, as he was feeding his Father-in-law's Flocks, and sent him into Egypt, to deliver the Israelites from the Oppression under which they groan'd. He returns into Egypt. His Brother Aaron comes to meet him, as far as Mount Horeb. The two Brothers present themselves before Pharaoh, and declare to him the Commands of the Lord. Pharaoh refuses to set the Israelites at liberty, and loads them with new Burdens. Moses performs several Miracles in his presence. The first Plague of Egypt. Water changed into Blood. About the 18th day of the sixth Month. II. Plague. Frogs cover the Land, and come into all the Houses. About the 25th day of the same Month. III. Plague. Gnats or Lice. About the first day of the seventh Month, which afterwards was the first Month of the holy Year. VI. The Boyls. About the third day of the same seventh Month. VII. Hail, Thunder, and Fire from Heaven. The fourth day of the seventh Month. VIII. The Locusts that infested all Egypt. The seventh day of the same Month. IX. The palpable Darkness. The tenth day of the same Month. On this Day Moses appointed, that this Month for the future should be the first Month, according to the sacred Style. He established the Celebration of the Passover, and set apart the Paschal Lamb, which was to be sacrificed four days afterwards. X. The Death of the First-born, in the Night of the 14th or 15th of the Month Abib. This same Night the Israelites celebrated the first Passover, and Pharaoh compell'd them to go out of Egypt. They depart from Rameses. From thence they went the first day to Succoth; from Succoth to Etham. From Etham they turn'd about towards the South, and came to encamp at Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the Sea, over against Baal-zephon. Pharaoh repenting that he had let them go, pursues them with his Army, and overtakes them at Pi-hahiroth. God gave the Hebrews a Pillar of Cloud to guide and protect them. Moses struck the Sea with his miraculous Rod, and God divided the Waters, so that the Israelites went thro' it on dry Ground. The Egyptians thinking to pass thro' after them, were all drowned; on the 21st of the first Month. Moses having pass'd over the Sea, was now in the Wilderness of Etham; and after they had march'd for three days in the Desart, the Israelites arrived at Marah, where Moses sweeten'd the Waters, by throwing in a certain Wood. From Marah they came to Elim, where they found twelve Fountains, and seventy Palm-trees. From Elim they came to the Red-Sea, then into the Desart of Sin, where God sent them Manna. From thence they went to Dophcah, Alush, and Rephidim, where Moses gave them Water from a Rock. About this Place the Amalekites came to oppose Israel, and inhumanly slew those who could not keep up with the body of the Army. Moses sent Joshua against them, while he himself went up to a Mountain, and lifted up his Hands on high. On |

| 2513 | On the third day of the third Month, after their Departure out of Egypt, the Israelites came to the foot of Mount Sinai, where they encamped for above a Year. Moses goes up into the Mountain, and God tells him, that he was ready to make a Covenant with Israel, on condition that the People would be obedient and faithful to him. Moses comes down from the Mountain, and makes his report to the People of what the Lord had proposed. The People make answer, that they were ready to enter into this Covenant. Moses ascends again into the Mountain, and gives an account to God of the good Dispositions of the People. God orders him to descend, and to bid the People prepare themselves for two Days to receive his Law; and that on the third Day the Lord would descend upon the Mountain, and give them his Law. He adds, that no one must approach the Mountain till the third Day; and that if any one should come near it, he should be put to death. On the third Day the Glory of God appear'd upon the Mountain; there was heard as it were the sound of a Trumpet, and of Thunder. Moses brought the People to the foot of Sinai, as it were to have the honour of appearing in the Presence of God. He alone goes up into the Mountain. God bids him go down, and to forbid the People to ascend, lest they should be put to death. Moses obeys, and declares to the People the Orders of God. He then ascends again, and God gave him the Decalogue. He comes down again, and proposes to the People what he had received from the Lord. The People consent to make a Covenant with the Lord on the Terms proposed. Moses goes up again into the Mountain, and God gives him several judiciary Precepts that properly belong'd only to Civil Policy. At his return he sets up twelve Altars at the foot of the Mountain, causes Victims to be sacrificed to ratify the Covenant, and sprinkles with the Blood of the Sacrifices the Book that contain'd the Conditions of the Covenant. He also sprinkles the People, who promise to be faithful to the Lord. After this Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and the seventy Elders of Israel, go up into the Mountain, and see the Glory of the Lord. They came down the same Day; but Moses, and his Servant Joshua, stay there six Days longer. The seventh Day the Lord call'd Moses, and shew'd him for forty Days all that concern'd his Tabernacle, the Ceremonies of the Sacrifices, and such other things as had not yet been propos'd to him. After these forty Days, God gave Moses the Decalogue written upon two Tables of Stone, and bid him make haste down, because the Children of Israel had made them a golden Calf, and had worship'd it. Moses came down, and finding the People dancing about their golden Calf, he threw down the Tables of Stone upon the Ground, and brake them. Then coming into the Camp, he took the Calf and broke it in pieces; and put to death, by the Sword of the Levites, to the number of twenty three thousand Israelites, who had worship'd this Idol. The Day following Moses went up again into the Mountain, and by his Intreaties obtain'd from God, that he would pardon his People the Crime they had now committed. God orders him to prepare new Tables of the Law, and promises him not to forsake Israel. Moses comes down from the Mountain, and prepares new Tables; and going up again the Day following, God lets him see his Glory. He continues again forty Days and forty Nights upon the Mountain, and God writes again his Law upon the Tables of Stone that he had prepared. After forty Days he came down, not knowing that his Face still shone with Glory. He puts a Vail over his Face, spoke to the People, and proposed | 1487 |

| proposed to them to erect a Tabernacle to the Lord; to which every one was to contribute, according to his Ability and Devotion. To accomplish this Design, he taxed every one of the Israelites at half a Shekel a-peice. This occasion'd a numbering of the People, who were found to amount to 603550 Men. He appointed Bezaleel and Aholiab to oversee the Work of the Tabernacle. | ||
| 2514 | The raising of the Tabernacle, and of all its Parts, on the first Day of the first Month of the second Year, after the coming forth out of Egypt. A second numbering of the People, the first Day of the second Month. The Consecration of the Tabernacle, of the Altars, of the Priests, the fifth Day of the second Month. The Levites number'd by themselves. They are all consecrated to the Service of the Tabernacle, instead of the First-born of Israel. On the eighth Day after the Consecration of the Tabernacle, or on the Octave of the Dedication, the Princes of the Tribes, each on his Day, offer their Presents to the Tabernacle. Jethro comes to the Camp of Israel, a few days before the Departure of the Children of Israel from the Camp at Sinai. On the twentieth day of the second Month, which answers to our May and June, the Israelites decamp from Sinai, and come to Taberah, or the Burning; from thence to Kibroth-hattaavah, or the Graves of Lust, three days Journey from Mount Sinai. Eldad and Medad prophesy in the Camp. Numb. xi. 26, 27. God sends Quails to his People. Numb. xi. 31, 32. They arrive at Hazeroth, where Aaron and Miriam murmur against Moses because of his Wife Zipporah. Miriam continues seven Days without the Camp. Thence they come to Rithmah, in the Wilderness of Paran, and thence to Kadesh-barnea; from whence they send twelve chosen Men, one out of each Tribe, to search out and examine the Land of Canaan. After forty Days these Men return to Kadesh-barnea, and exasperate the People against Moses, saying that this Country devour'd its Inhabitants, and that they were not able to make a Conquest of it. Caleb and Joshua withstood them, but the People mutiny; and God swore that none of the Murmurers should enter into the Land of Canaan, but that they should continue forty Years in the Desart, till this Generation was intirely consumed. He commands them to go back towards the Red-Sea. The People are resolved upon entring into Canaan, but they are repell'd by the Amalekites and the Canaanites, who beat them back as far as Hormah. | 1486 1485 |

Moses sends Ambassadors to the King of Edom, to desire a Passage thro' his Territories; but he refuses. The Israelites arrive at Kadesh, where Miriam died, aged an hundred and thirty Years. The Israelites murmur for want of Water. Moses causes it to come forth out of the Rock. But he, as well as Aaron, having shewn some distrust, God condemns them to die without entring into the Land of Promise. From Kadesh they went to encamp at Mount Hor, where Aaron dy'd, aged an hundred and twenty three Years, the first Day of the fifth Month. The King of Harad sets upon the Israelites, and takes several Captives.
