CUMMIN, a sort of Plant very like If. xxviii. 25.Fennel, it produces its Blossom and Branches in the form of a Nosegay. Isaiah says, that the Plowman opens and breaks the Clods of the Ground, then sows the Fitches and the Cummin; and threshes it, not with large Flails, and Cart Wheels, but with Rods only. These Seeds, and the manner of threshing them, signify the most gentle effects of God’s Justice. God reserves his severe Chastisements for the greatest Sinners. Jesus Christ tells the Scribes and Mat. xxiii. 23.Pharisees, that they are very careful to pay Tythe of Mint, Anyse, and Cummin, but neglect good Works, and the more essential practices of God’s Law.
