Corner

CORNER, Angulus, is taken for the extremity of any Land, Country, Habit, of the Beard and Hair, of a People, Building, Table, Altar, &c. Ye shall not round the corners of their heads, neither shalt thou mark the corners of thy beard, says Moses. Lev. xix. 27.Thou shalt not cut it off intirely towards the ears, at the extremity of the Chin. All Israel, all the extremities of the people, omnes anguli populorum; and all the Tribes assembled together at Mizpeh. In the opinion of some, by the extremity of Judic. xx. 2.the people, is meant all the People without exception, from one end of the land to the other. Others think this expression denotes the principal and first1. See likewise 1 Sam. xiv. 38. Draw near all ye chief (or corners) of the people. And Isai. xix. 13. They have reduced Egypt, even they who are the stay (corner) of all the tribes thereof. And Zephaniah iii. 6. I have cut off the nations, their corners are desolate. In all these passages the Corner of the People seems to denote the whole Body of the People from one Corner to another.

The Corner sometimes signifies the most devoted place, the part of the Edifice most in sight. Zachary speaking of the Tribe of Judah after their return Zech. x. 4.from the Captivity, says, Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail. This Tribe shall afford Corners, Heads; it shall produce the Corner Stone, the Messiah reproved If. xxviii. 16. Psal. cxvi. 22. Mat. xxi. 42, &c.and rejected by the Jews, but exalted to great Glory by his heavenly Father. Corner is taken likewise for the most obscure place of a House, Prov. xxi. 9. xxv. 24. It is better to dwell in a corner of the house top, than with an angry woman in a wide house; and Acts xxvi. 26. S. Paul speaking before Agrippa of matters relating to our Saviour and his resurrection, calls him to witness, and tells him, that these things are known sufficiently, and that they were not transacted in a Corner.
