Colzum

COLZUM, the City of Colzum, formerly so celebrated, and considerable, lay on the Red Sea upon the Shore, opposite to that where Elana stood, a Town situated at the foot of Mount Sinai º. Both these places are now in Ruins. There was formerly a Canal made from Colzum to Cairo, whereof at present no Footsteps are visible. Omar second Caliph after the Conquest of Egypt, commanded Arnon, who had subdued it, to have this Canal dug, that by this means Corn might be more easily transported from Egypt into the Red Sea. But as Medina in process of time ceased to be the seat of the Caliphs, the use of this Canal being then no longer so necessary, it was neglected and filled up with Sands.
