CINNERETH, or Ceneroth, or Cinneroth, a City in the Tribe of Naphtali, to Josh. xix. 35. Josh. xi. 2. xii. 3. Deut. iv. 49.the South whereof there lay a great Plain, which reached as far as the Dead Sea all along the River Jordan. Many believe, with a good deal of probability, that Cinnereth was the same as Tiberias; and as the Lake of Genezareth, which in Hebrew is called the Lake of Cinnereth, is without doubt that of Tiberias, there is some reason to believe that Cinnereth and Tiberias are likewise the same City. See Tiberias, where we relate some reasons for the contrary opinion.
The Lake of Cinnereth, the Sea of Cinnereth or Tiberias, or the Lake of 1 Macc. ii. 67.Genezareth, or Genezar1, are so many names given to it from the situation of the City Cinnereth or Tiberias, lying upon the western Shore, and towards the southern Extremity of it; and because the Canton of Genezar lies upon the eastern coast of it. It is called likewise the Sea of Galilee, because the north and east sides of it are enclosed by Galilee. In Josephus’s Account of it, it is an hundred Furlongs in length, and forty wide; that is to say, about twelve Miles or four Leagues and an half long, and two over. The water of this Lake is very good to drink, and breeds abundance of Fish. There S. Peter, S. Andrew, S. John, and S. James, who were Fishermen, carried on their Trade. The River Jordan passes through this Lake, and is continually bringing into it a fresh supply of water. The Country which borders upon the Sea of Galilee is very beautiful and fruitful.
