Christ

CHRIST. This word comes from the Greek, Christos, which signifies anointed, and answers to the Hebrew Messiah. This is the name attributed by the Hebrews to that Saviour and Deliverer whom they expected, and who was promised to them by all the Prophets. As the holy Unction was given to Kings, Priests and Prophets, by describing the promised Saviour of the World, under the name of Anointed, or Messiah, it was sufficiently evidenced, that the qualities of King, Prophet and High-Priest, would all eminently meet in him, and that he should exercise them not only over the Jews, but over all Mankind; and in a particular manner over those who should believe in him, and acknowledge him for their Saviour, their King, their Priest and their Prophet. We shall in another place speak of Jesus Christ the true Messiah and Redeemer of Mankind. See the Article Jesus Christ, and that of Messiah.
