Cerealis

CEREALIS, Tribune of the fifth Roman Legion, was sent by Vespasian with six hundred Horse, and three thousand Foot, against eleven thousand six hundred Samaritans, who had got together on mount Gerizim. Cerealis defeated, and cut them all in pieces1. The same Cerealis committed great Depredations in the upper Idumæa, and took some places there, while the Jews were at War with the Romans2. This perhaps is the same Cerealis, who was firnamed Vetilianus, and was left in Judæa, after the taking of Jerusalem. Lucilius Bassus was sent thither in his room, and Cerealis resigned to him the Troops which he commanded3.
