CARCHEMISH, a Town lying upon the Euphrates, and belonging to the Assyrians. Necho King of Egypt took it from 2 Chron. xxxv. 20. 2 Kings xxiii. 29. Jerem. lxvi. 1, 2. Isai. x. 9. Part. ii. Book v.the King of Assyria. Necho left a Garison in it, which was taken and cut in pieces in the fourth year of Jehoiachin King of Judah, by Nebuchadnezzar King of Babylon. Isaiah speaks of Carchemish, and seems to say, that Tiglath-pileser made a conquest of it; perhaps from the Egyptians. Profane Authors say nothing either of this or of these Wars. But it is very probable that Carchemish is the same as Cercusium, or Circesium, or Circeium, situated in the Angle formed by the conjunction of the Chaboras or Chebar, and the Euphrates.
