Cæsar

CÆSAR. This is the name of all the Roman Emperors, from Julius Cæsar to the Destruction of the Roman Empire. In Scripture the reigning Emperor was generally mentioned by the Name of Cæsar, without expressing any other, under which he was more known in History. For example, Jesus Christ calls Tiberius, Cæsar, without adding any other appellation, saying, Render unto Cæsar, the things Mat. xxii. 21.that are Cæsar’s. And S. Paul mentions Nero under the same Title only. I appeal unto Cæsar; that is to say, to Nero, who then reigned.
