Article LXI. Treatises and Dissertations upon St. John's Epistles.

UPON the Passage of St. John; 1 Ep. ch. 5. ver. 7. Of the three Witnesses.

See our Dissertation in our Comment upon those Epistles; and in the Col- lection of our Dissertations, tom. 3. p. 552.

That of Lewis Roger, printed at Paris, 1713, in 12mo. He was of Bourges, and Dean of the Cathedral Church. His Work abounds with Erudition and is agreeable to read: And if the Importance of the Point in question, excites the Reader’s just curiosity and attention, the accurate and learned manner wherewith he treats it, does certainly merit his approbation and esteem. The Author attacks particularly the Socinians, and Calvinists, whose interest it is so much to deny the Truth and Authority of this Passage. He does not spare even the Catholicks, who pretend that it is spurious.

John George Dorschæus has written upon the same Subject, at Strasburg, 1637, and at Frankfort, 1663, in 4to. See above.

Frederick Ernest Kettner, a Lutheran of Stolberg, and Minister at Quedlinburg, has also a Dissertation, wherein he pretends to shew the Authority and true Sense of this Passage; printed at Lipsick, 1702, in 4to. the second Edition enlarged.

Christopher Sandius, an Arian of Prussia, wrote upon the same passage; printed at Amsterdam, 1669, in 8vo. He died in 1680.

Doctor Mill’s Dissertation, in his New Testament.

That of Thomas Smith, in his Miscellanea, printed at London, in 1690, in 8vo. He was an Englishman; and died in 1710.

Godfrey Wegner wrote upon the same Subject; at Frankfort, 1690, in 4to. See above.

F. Alexander, in Nov. Test. tom. 1. art. Epist. Canonic.

Ketner, Dissert. in hunc locum, c. 4. printed at Lipsick, in 1702, in 4to. the second Edition much augmented. In it he pretends to shew the Authority, and true Meaning of this Passage. The Author was a Lutheran of Stolberg, and Minister of Quedlimbourg. Selden. tom. 2. de Synedr.
