Article LXIX. Protestant and Jewish Commentators upon Daniel.

THE Protestants and Jews have particularly taken pains in explaining the Prophet Daniel. We shall mention the principal of them only, as hitherto we have done.

There is an Exposition of this Prophet, not put out by Junius himself, but extracted from his Lectures, and published under his Name, at Geneva, 1594, in 4to.

John Drusius, in the Great Criticks, and, Synopsis; as well as in the Collection of his Works.

Amand. Polanus, whose Comment is against Bellarmin, and was printed at Basil, in 1599, in 4to. and 1606, in 8vo. He has likewise a Discourse upon Daniel’s Prophecy; printed ibid. in 1592. according to Lipenius, in his Bibl. Theol. tom. 1.

Geierus, who wrote a Comment printed at Lipsick, in 1667, in 4to. and 1684. We find it likewise among his other Works, whereof we have said something above. See his Title in the Index.

Andrew Willet, who wrote Hexapla upon Daniel. See the Title of Varenius’s Work: Collegium Canonicum in Danielem, Aggæum, Zechariam, & Malachiam; at Rostock, 1667, in 4to. We have already spoken of him. Calovius has written Annotata Anti-Grotiana in Jeremiam, & Danielem; at Wittemberg, in 1664, in 4to.

Hugh Broughton, an Englishman, put out Daniel’s Visions in Chaldee and Hebrew, taken from the original Text, and illustrated with Explanations in English, at London, 1596, in 4to. translated into Latin by John Boreel; printed at Basil, in 1599, in 4to. and with his other Works, whereof we have said something above. See his Title.

Solomon Gesner has written thirteen Disputations upon Daniel, with a chronological Preface before them; printed at Wittemberg, 1606, in 8vo. They had been so before in 1601, in 4to. and were again the third time, in 1638, in 8vo. He published, besides, Illustrations on this Prophet; printed in 1658, in 8vo. See his Title in the Index.

Ephraim Huits, an Englishman, wrote a Comment, an Analysis, and Paraphrase in English; printed at London, in 1644, in 4to.

Justus Henry Jungmann, a German Lutheran, published a new Way of explaining Daniel historically and theologically; at Lipsick, 1700, in 4to. the second Edition.

Among the Rabbins, Jacchiades, with Notes, by Constantine l’Empereur; printed at Amsterdam, 1633, in 4to.

There are, besides, Saadias Gaon, and Aben Ezra, whose Comments are with those which they have written upon all the Prophets.
