Article XVI. Catholick Commentators upon Numbers.

ORigen has written eight and twenty Homilies upon the whole Book of Numbers. With him we may join other Commentators, who have written on the Pentateuch. His eight and twenty Homilies are only in Latin, in the Latin Editions of Bazil and Genebrard.

Item, John Lorinus, Sixtinus Amama, de Muis, &c. F. le Long begins to speak of Lorinus’s Comments with mentioning that which he made on Numbers, as being the best and most considerable. It was printed at Lyons, in 1622, in folio. Commentarii in Librum Numerorum; in quibus, præter accuratam sensûs literalis explanationem, variarum tum Editionum tum Lectionum collationem cum vulgata quæ defenditur, mystici omnis generis sensus ex Patribus traduntur; Lugd. 1622, in fol. This is the Title of the Work, which gives a great Idea of it; and we need not question but he has come up to it.

John Rusbroeck, or Rusbrock, in his Tabernacle of Moses, explains several Mysteries in the Book of Numbers, in his Works printed at Cologn, 1552, in folio, and 1609, in quarto. He was of Brabant, a Canon Regular, and not a Benedictine, as F. le Long writes. He died in 1380.

Lewis Chastenier has join’d his Exercitations upon Numbers to those which he had written upon Exodus. See the preceding Article under Catholick Commentators.

John Ferus has added likewise his Enarrations upon Numbers to those which he had published upon Exodus and Deuteronomy, teronomy, &c. at Cologn, 1574, in 8vo. the second Edition. We began to speak of his Comments upon Genesis; and we shall have occasion often to mention him again.

Cornelius Hazart, to his moral Discourses on the principal Places of Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus, has added others upon Numbers. See the Article Genesis. This is the last time we shall speak of him, he having written nothing more.
