Article XI. Of Protestant and Jewish Commentators upon Exodus.

Among the Protestants, without repeating here the Names of those who have written upon the whole Bible, or upon the whole Pentateuch, John Drusius may be consulted, Sixtinus Amama, and Christopher Cartwright.

What Cartwright published consisted of Annotations, entitled, Electa Targumico-Rabbinica, at London, 1653, in 8vo. They are in the Supplement to the Great Criticks of the last Edition. We have taken notice of him upon Genesis.

We shall add Solomon Van Til, who made a sort of Comment from the xxvth to the xxxth Chapter of Exodus, printed at Amsterdam, 1714, in 4to. in Latin. It is a literal and slight Comment upon that Part of Exodus where Moses describes the Structure of the Tabernacle, the Ark, the Table of Shew-bread, the Candlestick with seven Branches, the Altar for Sacrifices, and of Incense; the Dress and Consecration of Priests; a difficult Subject requiring much Examination, wherein the Author does not engage himself. With what he has said, he has joined allegorical Allusions to Jesus Christ and the Church.

We shall add John le Coq, who has put out Observations upon Exodus, printed together with his Comment upon Genesis, at Franekar, 1650, in 4to. as we have said already upon the Pentateuch.

Nicolaus Gallasius, a French Calvinist, and Minister at Geneva, who died about 1570, made a Comment, which was printed at Franekar, 1560, in fol. and afterwards in 1640, in 4to.

John Lightfoot, with his Chronological Harmony, joined Annotations upon Exodus, odus, in Latin and English, at London, 1641, in 4to. There are many who have written only on some Chapters of Exodus; but we shall take no notice of them in this Place: This would carry us too far. Among the Jews, we shall mention only Samuel Japhé, a Rabbin, who put out a Comment, printed at Cracow, under this Title, In Rabboth, in Hebrew, 1654, in fol.
