Article X. Catholick Commentators upon Exodus.

ORIGEN has composed thirteen Homilies upon the first twenty-seven Chapters of this Book: Besides these, which are in Latin only, in the Editions of Basil and by Genebrard, M. Huet has published some Fragments of them in Greek and Latin, in his first Tome, p. 17, 26.

I do not again mention St. Austin, Theodoret, Procopius, Bede, Rupert, and others, who have written on the whole Pentateuch.

Lewis Lippoman has made a Catena of Passages taken from the Greek and Latin Fathers upon Exodus. It was printed at Paris, 1550, fol. and at Lyons 1657.

Benedict. Perrerius has composed an hundred and forty-seven Disputations, which are, as it were, so many Dissertations on the fifteen first Chapters of Exodus. They were printed at Venice, 1607, in 4to. the second Edition.

Jerom Oleaster, or Leonardus Marius, and Francis Titelman, have written nothing particularly on this Book; but they have all excelled in explaining it in their Comments upon the Pentateuch in general, and upon the whole Bible. Among the rest, Titelman.

Honorius of Autun, among the Ancients, explained, after a Spiritual manner, the Ten Plagues of Egypt, in Pez’s Anecdotes, Tom. 2. p. 91. Part the Second.

Lewis de Istella, a Dominican, who died in 1614, has made Scholia, and a kind of Comment interlined upon the same Book. It is with that printed upon Genesis. See above.

Sebastian Barradas, a Spanish Jesuit, wrote Itinerarium filiorum Israel ex Ægypto in terram repromissionis, printed at Antwerp, in fol. 1621. The Author was a Man of Piety and Learning. He died in 1615, at the Age of seventy-three. His Work may serve instead of a good Comment upon a great part of Exodus.

It is, without Contradiction, his best Performance upon Scripture: He joins the History with his Moral Observations. Besides the abovementioned Edition, there is one at Venice, in 4to. 1623, and at Mentz, 1627, fol.

John de la Haie, besides his large, and very large Bible, wrote Literal Comments upon Exodus, as well as Genesis, as we have shewn in the Article relating to this Book. These were printed at Paris in 1639, — 1641. two Volumes in fol.

Firminus Capito has an Exposition upon Exodus, continued as far as the Death of the Firrst-born in Egypt, and divided into several Homilies, at Paris, 1576, — 1580, in 8vo. We have said something of him upon Genesis, and this is all he has written; so that we have no Reason to say more of him hereafter.

Henry Lewis Chastenier, besides his Exercitations upon Genesis, has written others upon Exodus, &c. at Poitiers, 1629, in 4to. and upon other Books whereof we shall take notice hereafter, as we have already spoken of him in the Article of General Catholick Commentators.

Haimo Corius put out three Vols. in fol. of Literal and Moral Comments upon the Ten Plagues of Egypt, under the Title of Pharao-Flagellatus, at Milan, 1660, 1677. He was an Italian, born at Milan.

John Fery, in Latin Ferus, besides his Enarrationes upon Genesis, published some likewise upon Exodus, &c. at Cologn, 1574, the second Edition, in 8vo. We have already spoken of him, in the Article upon Genesis, and shall again say more of him, infrà.

John Nodin put out, The Victory of the Hebrews over the Egyptians, or a Comment upon the fifteen first Chapters of Exodus, upon the Usefulness of Preachers, at Lyons, 1611, in fol. He was by Nation a Frenchman, and a Cordelier, Doctor in Divinity of the Paris Faculty, and died before 1611, as Crow says.

William Pepin, who wrote upon Genesis, as we have observ’d already, wrote such another Exposition upon Exodus, printed at Paris, 1534, in 8vo. M. Dupin takes notice of his other Works in the first Tome of his Tables, p. 956.

Galeasse Trissin wrote select Expositions upon Exodus, printed at Venice in 1614, in 4to. And this is all we have of his, with what he published upon Genesis. See the Article wherein we have spoken of him.
